Greetings. My name is Susan. Life is not going well, here in Atlanta, Georgia. Since the Civil War started, my old friend in Chicago, Natalie, is not speaking to me. She hasn't sent a single letter.
Papa is out with the boys. It's hard, growing up at only 13 years of age, with 5 brothers. Keith is the youngest. He's seven years old. He thinks the war is a game. We're trying to teach him better. Of course, even at his age, he is working in the field. Then comes Jacob. He's 11. Probably the most mature 11 year old I've ever known. He works in the field just as well as Marcus, the oldest, and understands exactly what the war is about. Brian is 15. He hates working in the field, and is going through that "I want to be cool" stage. He tries to hang with the guys from town, but ugh, that really never happens. Randy is 17. He's very shy, since the war started. He always keeps a sour face. I worry about him. Lastly, Marcus is 20. Naturally, my parents couldn't afford it to send him to college. He tries to make the best of everything.
I hate the war more than anyone else. All I want is for my best friend, Natalie, to write me. She's the only person I can really vent to. There's only one other kid by me. I'm pretty sure she's a girl. I've never met her, though. If only someday, I would meet her in town.
"Susan?" I heard Mama calling.
"Yes, Mama?"
"Please run into town, and get me some knitting kneedles! Brian sat on my old ones."
This was my chance. I only prayed that the girl from next door would be in town.
